A tank's advertised size is a useful starting point, but it does not describe every detail a bespoke lid needs to accommodate. Glass thickness, braces, overflows and equipment positions can affect the design. Clear measurements and photographs make it easier to discuss the right fit.
Confirm what needs measuring
Give us the aquarium manufacturer, model and version if known. Mention modifications and anything fitted across the top. Ask which measurement points are needed for your particular design before treating an internal or external dimension as the final lid size. Different tank constructions need different reference points.
Use millimetres throughout, keep the tape straight and repeat each measurement. Record the actual reading; do not add your own clearance allowance unless requested. If the front and back measurements differ, send both rather than choosing an average.
Make a simple top-view sketch
Label front, back, left and right. Add the dimensions requested and draw the position of braces, overflow boxes and obstructions. For equipment positions, measure from a clearly identified fixed reference edge. A mark saying “light mount on the left” is less useful than a dimension with a labelled starting point.
- Show light mounts and their full footprint where they meet the lid area.
- Mark return pipes, feeder brackets, cable bundles and other equipment.
- Include anything that may need removal for servicing.
- Explain how you want to feed the fish and access the water.
Send photographs that explain the measurements
A clear view from above helps show the layout. Add close-ups of corners, braces and any awkward equipment. Keep the orientation consistent with your sketch. Photographs support measurements; perspective and reflections mean they cannot replace accurate dimensions.
Review the artwork against the tank
Check dimensions, orientation, cut-outs and access before approving the visual artwork. Revisit the tank with the drawing rather than relying on memory. If a light mount or feeder is going to change, resolve that before approval.
LAD production takes 10–15 working days from approval of the visual artwork; delivery time is additional. Because the lid is bespoke, approval is an important checkpoint. Read the ordering and cancellation details in our FAQs, and explore aquarium lids when you are ready to plan yours.
