Aquarium escape-gap checklist: light mounts, cables and feeding openings

Oct 22, 2026London Aquatic Design

A lid can cover most of the water and still leave a gap beside a light mount, cable or feeding opening. Use this checklist with the aquarium set up as you normally run it, including every bracket, pipe and feeder. Work around the whole rim rather than checking only the main mesh panels.

For the wider explanation of fish jumping and lid materials, see our complete aquarium lid guide. This post is the practical inspection to use after fitting a lid, moving equipment or finishing maintenance.

1. Start with the frame and corners

  • Check that each section rests on its intended supports and sits in the correct orientation.
  • Look along all four edges from above and from the side. A panel can look aligned from one angle while being lifted at another.
  • Inspect corners and the joins between separate lid sections. Check for anything holding the frame away from its usual position.
  • Look for damage, distortion or a change in fit. Send us photographs if something no longer sits as it should.

Do not force a section down or add a weight to hold it in place. Find what is obstructing it before continuing.

2. Check around light mounts and brackets

LAD allows a small fitting tolerance around the agreed equipment so the lid can be put on and lifted off easily. An excessively tight fit can catch on equipment, make removal difficult and risk damage when the lid is forced. With the agreed equipment fitted, the remaining gaps around cutouts should be smaller than the mesh openings.

  • Look at the whole footprint of each mount, including clamps and adjustment knobs beneath it.
  • Check both sides of the cutout, especially behind the mount where the view is restricted.
  • Confirm that the mount is not pushing up the frame or stopping a neighbouring panel from seating.
  • Before changing a light mount or bracket, check that it suits the existing cutout. Similar-looking equipment can have a different footprint.

3. Follow every cable and pipe

  • Check where return pipes, hoses and cables cross the lid line.
  • Make sure a cable is not trapped beneath the frame or pulling a section out of position.
  • Inspect any opening left after equipment has been removed. A former cable route can become an unnoticed escape gap.
  • Check access to rear chambers and overflow areas where fish could enter or become trapped.

Finalise equipment choices and cutout positions before approving the artwork. LAD cannot modify a finished lid to accommodate later equipment changes. Do not assume a different mount, pipe or feeder will fit the existing cutout, and do not force or enlarge the opening to make it fit.

4. Close feeding openings and refit access panels

  • Close every feeding cover after use and check that it is seated properly.
  • If you use a feeder cup or automatic feeder, inspect the surrounding opening with the accessory in its normal position.
  • Check what remains open when an accessory is removed for cleaning.
  • Show anyone who helps with feeding how the covers and removable sections fit.

5. Inspect the mesh without pulling it

Look for tears, detached edges or equipment pressing against the mesh. LAD mesh is glued in place and is not a replaceable insert. Do not pull it out, retension it or attempt a repair with an unapproved adhesive. Send us clear photographs and your order details if you find damage.

Check that the remaining gaps around fitted equipment are smaller than the mesh openings, and assess the mesh itself against the smallest fish you keep. A cutout left empty after equipment is removed needs particular attention. A lid cannot guarantee containment in every setup.

6. Make a final check before walking away

After feeding or maintenance, check three things: every lid section is back on its supports, feeding covers are closed, and equipment is running normally. Repeat the full inspection whenever lights, pipes, feeders or cables change.

For a new order, include top-down and close-up equipment photographs so cutouts can be agreed in the artwork. Confirm any planned equipment changes before artwork approval; the manufactured lid cannot subsequently be modified by LAD. Our lid options guide explains what to prepare, and the FAQs cover common fitting and ordering questions.
